Today, patients having cataract surgery have the option of choosing femtosecond assisted laser cataract surgery (FACS). A laser is utilized to perform parts of the procedure normally performed manually by the surgeon. Laser assisted cataract surgery is not covered by health insurance plans, and can cost a patient well over a thousand dollars or more. To date, there is no evidence that this option offers any improvement in a patient’s vision after surgery. As recently as October 2016, the journal “Ophthalmology” published a study confirming that there is no benefit to a patient’s final visual result. Our practice can produce this studies on request.
